Sunday, 24-th July 2016
The climate of the historic town whose history disappears somewhere in the darkness of the Middle Ages was the inspiration to organize a knightly tournament in Szydłów. The presence of the ruins of the castle and defensive walls as well as the local Brotherhood of Knights and the Old-Time Dance Assembly of the Szydłów Castle are conducive factors.
The first “Knightly Tournament for the Sword of the king Casimir the Great” was held in 1999. Why is it for the sword of this particular king? Because it is to Casimir the Great that Szydłów is most indebted to. It was he who encircled the town with defensive walls, built the castle and founded the beautiful St. Ladislaus Church. During his reign, the last descendant of the Piast family visited Szydłów seven times.
During knightly tournaments in Szydłów you can see colourful knightly parades along the defensive walls, effective knight battles with any kind of cold steel weapon, horse stuntmen’s shows, theatre of fire, a battle for the castle, performances of shooting skills with the use of bows and cross-bows, shows of hand firearms and artillery arms. The winner of the tournament is awarded the king’s sword.
